This article will dive into why traditional acne treatments may not be working and how a shift to a more holistic method can lead to lasting, clear skin. Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How conventional acne medications may only address surface-level symptoms while ignoring the root cause of your skin issues.
  • The key differences between drug-based treatments and healing approaches that support your body’s detoxification processes.
  • How The Skolnikoff Method can help you achieve radiant, clear skin by addressing the underlying imbalances in your body.

Why Clearing Up Acne Requires More Than Just Medication

(In Fact, Acne Medication Will Get You into Truckloads of Trouble as You Will Soon Discover)

Functional Medicine is relatively recent compared to traditional approaches. Conventional medicine is often plagued by contradictions and misinformation. (For instance, you might read Dr. Candace Pert’s Molecules of Emotion. The late Candace B. Pert, who discovered the opiate receptor, did not receive credit for her discovery due to her gender.) This unsettling reality about conventional medicine leads to many troubling stories about our current healthcare system.

As the author of The Skolnikoff Method: New Medicine For A New You, I share numerous medical horror stories, including my own. When I first started using synthetic Vitamin A acne treatments, I was only nineteen and had no knowledge of the liver or its functions. My understanding of anatomy was minimal, similar to many other American teenagers at that age.

Before starting this final acne treatment, which required all women to take a pregnancy test before and during use, I asked my father, “Dad, what is a liver and what does it do?”

He showed me where the liver is located and explained, “The liver processes fat and performs several other functions.”

I replied, “Oh, it processes fat. That doesn’t sound too important.

He said, “Actually, it’s quite crucial. The liver is very important.”

I then asked, “So, do you think I should take this medication?”

He responded, “That’s a decision you need to make.”

I explained, “I really want to get rid of my acne and I don’t know what to do.”

He said, “If you’re determined to clear up your acne, we might want to try this treatment. Research suggests it can be curative.”

At that time, I was a naïve 19-year-old freshman starting college, eager to be accepted and not stand out because of my severe cystic acne, which was so bad it even bled. I hope you won’t be as uninformed as I was. Given that the liver’s main role is to detoxify, what other key organs and glands are involved in detoxification and maintaining healthy skin?

Why Detoxifying Your Body Is the Secret to Clear Skin

In addition to your skin and liver, your kidneys, gallbladder, and colon also play crucial roles in detoxification. Many scientists and doctors don’t emphasize that every cell in your body is involved in detoxifying. Essentially, you are a detoxification machine. The endoplasmic reticulum within your cells helps with this process. You can expel toxins through your lungs, sweat them out through your skin—which is your body’s largest organ—or eliminate them through urine and feces. When heavy metal levels are high, your body can deposit these toxins in your hair. Additionally, you can expel toxins through sneezing or coughing, as mucus and phlegm carry unwanted toxins. When your body doesn’t effectively eliminate toxins, diseases can develop. The Skolnikoff Method New Medicine For A New You supports your body’s detoxification processes and addresses the root causes of many diseases through therapies that precede conventional medicine and may eventually replace it.

I had previously used over six different toxic medications to treat my acne, but no one investigated my toxic colon or the allergies I had to wheat and dairy—issues that were actually causing my severe cystic acne. I never received a thorough new patient health history to identify the underlying causes of my acne. There was no functional evaluation of my organs or glands, nor was any blood work done. Instead, the dermatologist simply prescribed highly toxic drugs for what had become a chronic condition, the beginnings of which were linked to intestinal disease in my family. Although the dermatologist asked a few questions about my family’s health, he didn’t delve into the details, missing crucial aspects of my condition.

Years later, my grandmother passed away from gangrenous intestines, my father was diagnosed with lymphoma, and another family member experienced such severe and chronic sleep issues that they now rely on daily melatonin and probiotics. Another relative developed a dysfunctional stomach and small intestine, leading to debilitating chronic arthritis and the need for two hip replacements before the age of 76. This person also needs psyllium seed fiber every day to maintain regular bowel movements. Is there a pattern emerging here?

The dermatologist only took a cursory family history, asking just one or two questions. I was prescribed a highly toxic medication whose side effects—more accurately described as effects—were so severe that they outweighed any potential benefits. This drug was later involved in lawsuits, prompting the manufacturer to reformulate it to a less toxic version. Pharmaceutical companies have done this with many prescription drugs. The medication in question was a synthetic form of Vitamin A that impaired the liver’s ability to metabolize fat, even though one of the liver’s primary functions is fat metabolism. What was going on? Vitamin A is essential for proper liver function.

I realized I needed to make a change. I was feeling so unwell that it was hard to function—I couldn’t think clearly, had low energy, and faced numerous digestive issues. I was dependent on a multitude of supplements and herbs just to get through the day. I took a handful of pills in the morning, another at night, and more with each meal. It was overwhelming. Does this sound familiar? Do you rely on various nutritional supplements daily? I was determined not to follow the path of chronic (or fatal) conditions like many of my family members. I didn’t want to continue poisoning my body with ineffective drugs for my acne. This struggle ultimately led me to develop The Skolnikoff Method New Medicine For A New You and began a new journey for myself.
